Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty aiming for ‘hyper-realism’

A new Call of Duty game in development at Modern Warfare 3 studio Sledgehammer Games is gunning for hyper-realism, according to a job ad at the studio. The senior FX artist requisition has since been removed, but Videogamer captured it, and reports it states a successful candidate will “create the most exceptional real-time effects with hyper-realism for [Sledgehammer's] next Call of Duty game.”

War is going to get really real, according to the job ad.

The job ad also reportedly indicates that the new Call of Duty game may release on current-generation consoles. The listing asks that a candidate have a “solid professional experience and knowledge of the limitations and performance of current-generation hardware.” No further information on the project is available, and as of press time, Activision had not responded to GameSpot’s request for comment.

Advanced graphics is something Activision is aware Call of Duty fans are asking for. Last month, Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia explained that with the studio’s upcoming Black Ops II, the focus for Treyarch has been to “push.”

“[Fans] want us to make a better-looking game; they want things. I don’t think those are things people can’t ask for,” he said. “We asked ourselves that very same question–we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid.”

Before signing on to assist Infinity Ward on Modern Warfare 3, Sledgehammer Games was at work on a third-person action-adventure Call of Duty game. That game isn’t likely to see the light of day, as Sledgehammer Games general manager Glen Schofield said last year the project will “probably” be canceled.

The next Call of Duty game is Black Ops II, which is slated to arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13. That game is a sequel to 2010′s original Black Ops, which is the best-selling series entry to date, moving more than 25 million copies as of August 2011.
